La Crosse, WI – The focus was on praise,
encouragement, and personal challenge as 260 CAP members from the Wing
met in La Crosse last weekend for the 2008 Wisconsin Wing Conference at
the Best Western Midway Riverside Resort. The dedicated members of the
La Crosse Composite Squadron, especially Lt Col Sorenson and Capt
Snyder and the rest of the planning committee, deserve special praise
for their hard and selfless work.
Col Don Haffner praised many members of the Wing for their
accomplishments and dedication in the past year as he handed out
numerous awards and certificates. Encouragement and training filled
the 30 breakout sessions for officers and cadets. Personal challenge
came from all three of our main speakers. Colonel Haffner asked cadets
to set their sights on the next test, milestone, or self-improvement
and always do what they know is right. He also talked about the
difference that senior members can make in the lives of cadets. He
told a story of the impact one officer made in his life and how he
hoped his words would give that man encouragement and joy knowing how
much of a difference his influence had made.
Lt Col David Jessop, Deputy Commander of Ft McCoy, spoke of the
challenges faced by the founders of Camp McCoy and the challenges the
Army faces now as it trains personnel at the facility. When La Crosse
Squadron Commander, Lt Col Bill Sorenson, presented a plaque to Lt Col
Jessop, we all learned that Lt Col Sorenson was a former commander of
Ft McCoy! How fitting that our Cadet Competition took its volleyball
challenge to the fitness center this year!
Col John E. McCoy, Commander of the Wisconsin Air National Guard, spoke
of the challenge to find young people who qualify for the military,
showed us photos of aircraft from the ANG inventory in their various
roles, and smiled as he looked out at his audience filled with our
cadets.
Last, but not least, was the chance to meet friends and make new ones.
Cadets, officers, and family who met at encampment, in the field
SAREX’s, or at Cadet Competition were talking in the halls. Others
perhaps saw one another at Military Ball or met online thru Facebook or
email now got a chance to have fun in the pool, listen to the Soldiers
of Sax during the banquet, or dance to the music of the ’63 Stingrays
with Capt David Snyder (man of many talents) on guitar.
