March 18, 2008. Seven color guard teams and two drill teams representing a total of eight composite squadrons across the state took part in the 2008 Wisconsin Wing Cadet Competition, held at Volk Field and Fort McCoy March 15-16.
Waukesha Composite Squadron took first place in the color guard Competition, and Timmerman Composite Squadron was awarded first place in Drill Team competition. These teams will advance to the Regional Cadet Competitions to be held May 2-4 at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. The National Competition will take place at Wright Patterson Air Force Base June 27-29, 2008.
Timmerman Composite Squadron placed second in Color Guard, followed by
the La Crosse Composite Squadron in third place. The team from the
Racine Composite Squadron came in second in the drill team
competition.
Also competing were color guard teams from the La Crosse Composite
Squadron (which took third place), Milwaukee Composite Squadron #5,
Kenosha Composite Squadron, Fox cities Composite Squadron, and the
461st Composite Squadron from West Bend.
In individual events, West Bend Comp Squadron Cadet Master Sgt Andrea
Brown won the female Fleet Foot Award for females, and Cadet Airman
First Class Adam Salerno of the Kenosha Composite Squadron won the male
Fleet Foot Award, each for having the best time in the mile run amongst
color guard contestants. Also, Cadet Senior Master Sgt Dylan Cavins of
the Waukesha Composite Squadron also took top honors in the color guard
written exam.
In the Drill Team individual competitions, Cadet Lt. Colonel Heather
Martin (Timmerman Composite Squadron) was awarded both the female Fleet
Foot award and first place in the written exam. Cadet 2d Lt. Michael
Thoennes (Racine Composite Squadron) won the male Fleet foot award.
At the awards ceremony held Sunday, March 16, the Waukesha color guard
team was also given the Special Team Award, in recognition for their
team unity and helpfulness to other teams. This Esprit de Corps award
was determined by votes cast by the teams competing.
The goal of the competition is to increase cadet training in
leadership, aerospace education, physical fitness, and teamwork, as
well as to build a sense of belonging to a larger organization.
Events included in-ranks inspection and various forms of military
drill, but cadets were also challenged with written exams and panel
quizzes on aerospace knowledge and CAP history, and physical training
contests of running and volleyball.
This was the first year in which the event was held over two days.
According to Lt. Colonel Jo Stys, Cadet Competition Project Officer,
“Cadet competition is one of the few times when you see this many
cadets together in one place. That’s why our Wing Commander, Colonel
Don Haffner, approved expanding this activity to a two-day even, to
give us time for some social activities to get to know one another
better.”
The two-day event also promotes safety, as teams do not have to make a trip home after a long day of rigorous competition.
Next year, the hope is to return to Volk Field with teams from even more squadrons.
The event would not be possible without help from many Wing CAP staff
members, amongst them, Major Steve Piehl (Director of Programs),
Captain Terry Schmitt (Deputy Director), and 1 Lt. Alison Schneller
(Advisor to the Cadet Advisory Council), as well as many additional
support staff members.
